Helping professionals approach conversations about change and growth

About

ABOUT MOTIVATIONAL INTERVIEWING

Motivational Interviewing (MI) "is a particular way of talking with people about change and growth to strengthen their own motivation and commitment." MI began in the addictions field but has since developed into multiple health and care settings. These include Primary Care, managing people with chronic pain or a high falls risk as well as helping people with chronic conditions better manage their health through discussing lifestyle behaviour change. More recently MI has been explored within the area of sports coaching, leadership in organisation’s, and schools where the same spirit, tasks and techniques can be used to cultivate development and change.

The individual is a garden to be tended not a machine to be repaired. MI doesn't analyse the broken machine. It tends and cultivates the garden.

ABOUT ME

As a Physiotherapist, educator, and trainer with over 20 years of experience in the helping health professions, I am focused on both helping people to live their best lives as well as supporting staff to support their people to live their best lives. My clinical work primarily focuses on community group exercise and education interventions for people with chronic health conditions (inc: diabetes, heart disease, osteoarthritis).

I commenced my MI journey in 2009 completing a Postgraduate Certificate in Health Sciences (Health Behaviour Change). Since then, I have led undergraduate and postgraduate MI training with health professional students and run both 1-day face to face and zoom workshops for registered health professionals both nationally and internationally. I am a member of the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers, an international organisation of trainers in MI.
